Answer: Great question! Saw palmetto extract is a popular supplement used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. BPH refers to noncancerous growth of the prostate and is a common cause of many urinary tract symptoms in men. BPH symptoms may include slow urine stream, incomplete emptying, urgency, and urinating frequently at night. Saw palmetto extract comes from the fruit of the saw palmetto plant. Historically, this supplement has been used by many cultures for the treatment of urinary and reproductive system problems. More recently, saw palmetto as a BPH treatment has become a high topic of debate by BPH experts worldwide. Some small studies have shown that saw palmetto improves BPH related urinary symptoms and prevents symptoms from developing in the future. However, larger studies have failed to support these findings. At this time, the American Urologic Association does not have any recommendations for or against the use of saw palmetto for the treatment of BPH. Its use should be considered experimental.
