PICTURE BOOKS Hector’s Favorite Place by Rook Jo Ages 4-8

Hector is a hedgehog who loves his home so much that he doesn’t often go out. When friends invite him to engage in fun activities, he lets his fears and worries take over and decides it’s better to remain home than face potential dangers (like getting the flu!) Soon Hector realizes that his worries are keeping him from enjoying himself, so he needs to learn to be brave and try new things.

My Strong Mind by Niels Van Hove Ages 4-8

Kate faces several situations and she applies a positive attitude to deal with her challenges. Amongst them are getting ready in time in the morning, doing cartwheels, standing in front of the whole class for show and tell, and playing basketball. Kate applies techniques like goal setting, positive self-talk, accepting failure as learning, visualizat­ion of a problem, breathing or mindfulnes­s exercise, gratitude, and controlled distractio­n.

In My Heart: A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek Ages 4-8

The Growing Hearts series celebrates the milestones of a toddler’s emotional developmen­t, from conquering fears and expressing feelings to welcoming a new sibling. With this book, children can start recognizin­g and naming these feelings.

JUVENILE FICTION Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper Grades 4-6

This story is about a young girl named Melody who has cerebral palsy. She has a lot of thoughts and feelings but she isn’t able to express them. The book gives excellent look into the mind of someone else. Garvey’s Choice by Nikki Grimes Grades 4-6 Garvey is more interested in reading, astronomy, and anything but sports. When his father him to be active in sports, Garvey decides to join the school chorus instead. This story talks about the importance of being true to yourself and finding who you are.

The Science of Breakable Things by Tae Keller Grades 4-6

Natalie has always focused on science to help solve her problems. With her mother suffering from depression, Natalie want to help and decides a science project is the best way.

Each Tiny Spark by Pablo Cartaya Grades 4-6

This touching story is about a girl named Emilia whose father has just returned home from deployment and is different than she remembers. Instead of opening up, he shuts himself inside the auto shop to work an old car. Emilia sees tiny sparks of him reappear when he teaches her how to weld.
