Early Sunday shootings near James Madison University campus left eight people wounded in Virginia and four people, including three students, were hurt in a shooting at Clark Atlanta University, authorities said.

At least one shooter fired into a crowd during a gathering after 2 a.m., leaving each of the victims with non-life-threatening wounds, the Harrisonburg, Va., Police Department said.

The shooting occurred less than a mile away from the James Madison campus in northern Virginia. Each of the victims, who range in age from 18 to 27 years old, were hospitalized, according to officials.

“HPD is currently investigating whether there was one or multiple individuals who fired shots,” police reported Sunday. “There were no suspects on the scene when officers arrived.”

No arrests have been made and a motive has not been made public. Police considered the shooting to be an isolated incident and don’t believe the community is at further risk.

Harrisonburg Mayor Deanna Reed slammed the shooting as “unacceptable.”

“There is no place for violence such as this in our society,” Reed said. “I call on all in our community to support those suffering today,” Reed said.

None of the victims are students at the university, campus police said Sunday.

University police issued a shelter-in-place notice after the shooting and urged students to keep the victims “in your thoughts as they recover.”

In Georgia, a large group of people were listening to a DJ during Clark Atlanta University’s homecoming when officers on patrol in the area heard gunshots, Atlanta police said.

The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. near Atlanta University Center’s Robert W. Woodruff Library, they said.

A preliminary investigation found three students and another person were injured when shots were fired from a vehicle, Clark Atlanta University said.

Atlanta police said multiple people were shot. One of the victims was grazed and refused medical attention. Three others were taken to a hospital, though they were conscious and alert.
