GRAVETTE — The Gravette Public Library hosted its sixth annual Moon Over Main Street star party, and many who were in attendance agreed it was the biggest and best event yet.

An estimated 150 people came out to enjoy the evening, held in collaboration with the Sugar Creek Astronomical Society. The event was held Oct. 1 since it was designated as International Observe the Moon Night, an annual worldwide observance designed to encourage learning about and viewing the moon and its connection to the other planets and space exploration.

Members of the astronomical society set up telescopes on Main Street in an area roped off in front of the library, each one trained on a planet, one on the moon, one on Saturn, some on Jupiter, so guests could observe various celestial bodies.

The members helped visitors use the telescopes and answered their questions. Library manager Karen Benson and her staff provided star charts showing a map of the night sky and pieces of red cellophane to place over visitors’ flashlights to equip them for nighttime use.

A special event for children was held inside the library. About 40 children participated in a “Goodnight Moon” story time. Each was given a soft plush blanket which they spread on the floor, providing a comfortable seat while they listened to the stories being read. Several came in pajamas and brought stuffed animals with them to enjoy the “slumber party.” The Friends of the Gravette Public Library sold hot dog dinners with chips and hot cocoa in front of the library beginning at 6 p.m. and sold out of hot dogs early in the evening.

One young mother commented, “My kids are having so much fun!” And adults in attendance seemed to be enjoying themselves as well.
