- By Karen Rice

Founded in 1989 by June Self and headquartered in Springdale, the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank distributes food both purchased and donated to over 115 partner agencies in the four counties they serve in the region. In addition, the Food Bank sponsors a Mobile Pantry program, to meet the needs of senior citizens with limited mobility. The Food Bank also assists individuals in applying for SNAP benefits and provides resources for job-seekers.

How many people are food insecure in Northwest Arkansas?

“There are more than 65,000 food insecure people in Northwest Arkansas.”

Is that an increase from previous years?

“The number is very fluid as people move in and out of the area every day. We are seeing more and more new faces at our partner agencies and Mobile Pantries each month.”

How is the food distributed?

“Many ways. We distribute food to the 115 plus partner agencies thru delivery and agency pickup. We also have 20 mobile pantries that take food to outlying areas once a month and distribute food to those in that service area along with our School Pantry Program.”

How much food was distributed last year?

“In 2021 we distributed 14 million pounds of food and provided 11.3 million meals in the four county area we serve.”

What are some of the goals of the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank?

“Our goal is to nourish, feed and lead those who are in need. Food does much more than just fill a stomach. And good healthy food is a priority for us. We are continually trying to secure fresh fruits and vegetables for our clients as well as canned foods that are lower in sodium, low sugar canned fruits, fresh protein and whole grains. Healthy foods help keep people healthy.”

Where can people find out more about how to qualify and get food?

“The best way is to visit our website www.nwafoodbank.org. We have a full listing of our partner agencies by county.”

Why is it important for people to donate?

“We appreciate every single donation we receive – no matter the size. All donations we receive go directly to those in need in our area. For each dollar we receive, we can provide up to 8 meals. You can donate food, time or money to us and make a difference in someone’s life.”

What are some other needs of the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank?

“We are always looking for volunteers as well. We couldn’t do what we do without volunteers – and it is super easy to sign up. Just visit our website nwafoodbank.org, click to volunteer and register for a day and time that is convenient for you. We gladly welcome individuals, groups or companies!”
