SUN BELT MEN TROY 66, ARKANSAS STATE 54

Markise Davis posted his first career double-double Saturday, scoring 13 points and grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds in a losing effort by Arkansas State University (9-8, 1-3 Sun Belt Conference) to Troy (11-6, 3-1) at Trojan Arena in Troy, Ala.

The Red Wolves trailed 31-27 at halftime and cut the lead to 31-29 early in the second half, but the Trojans pushed the lead to 41-33 with 12:54 left. Five consecutiv­e points by Terrance Ford — who finished with 10 points — trimmed the lead to 47-42, but ASU would not get any closer.

Zay Williams paced Troy with 16 points, while Christian Turner scored 13 and Christyon Eugene added 12.

ASUN MEN AUSTIN PEAY 86, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 62

The University of Central Arkansas fell to Austin Peay on Saturday night at the Dunn Center in Clarksvill­e, Tenn., as the Governors shot 55.2 from the field.

Four Austin Peay (8-9, 2-2 ASUN) players reached double figures, led by 17 points apiece from Cameron Copeland and Guy Fauntleroy. Fauntleroy was responsibl­e for four of the Governors’ nine three-pointers.

Eddy Kayouloud and Camren Hunter each had 13 points to lead UCA (5-12, 0-4). VJ Reeves continued his consistent play with 10 points.

SWAC MEN UAPB 70, TEXAS SOUTHERN 66

A free throw from Kylen Milton with 2:15 left in the game allowed the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to snap a 62-62 tie and eventually rally to nab a come-from-behind victory at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff.

Milton had 20 points for UAPB (5-11, 1-2 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference), which trailed 52-40 with less than 13 minutes left in the game before staging its comeback.

A lay-up from Ismael Plet started a 16-4 run for the Golden Lions. The teams continued to go back and forth until Milton’s foul shot put UAPB on top for the remainder of the game.

Shaun Doss added 22 pints and 10 rebounds for the Golden Lions.

Davon Barnes had 22 points, and John Walker III tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds for Texas Southern (4-12, 0-3). Kehlin Farooq tossed in 11 points and 12 rebounds while Zytarious Mortle finished with 10 points.

SUN BELT WOMEN APPALACHIA­N STATE 59, ARKANSAS STATE 58

Izzy Higginbott­om scored 16 points and Lauryn Pendleton added 13, but it wasn’t enough as Arkansas State (5-10, 0-4 Sun Belt Conference) fell to Appalachia­n State (6-9, 2-2) at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro.

In a game that was tied 10 times and featured 11 lead changes, Higginbott­om hit a jumper that tied the game for the final time at 57-57 with 4:25 to go. The game remained tied until Emily Carver hit a layup with 2:11 left to give Appalachia­n State at 59-57 lead.

Higginbott­om was fouled with 1:22 remaining and hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to 59-58. Arkansas State had one final possession, but Pendleton missed a three-pointer with 3 seconds left.

Janay Sanders led Appalachia­n State with 13 points.

ASUN WOMEN CENTRAL ARKANSAS 71, E. KENTUCKY 57

The University of Central Arkansas defeated Eastern Kentucky at the Farris Center in Conway on Saturday afternoon thanks to a hot-shooting first quarter.

The Sugar Bears (6-8, 1-2 ASUN) made 11 of 14 shots in the first quarter, a season-high, to take a 25-17 lead over the Colonels (9-7, 2-1).

Eastern Kentucky went up 4-2 in the early going but after Kinley Fisher hit a three-pointer to make it 5-4, UCA never relinquish­ed the lead.

The Sugar Bears extended their advantage in the second quarter with a 14-8 surge to make it 39-25 at halftime.

Parris Atkins’ hot streak kept things going for the Sugar Bears. She scored a career-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. It was her seventh straight game in double figures. Randrea Wright (17) and Kierra Prim (13) also scored in double digits.

UCA did most of its damage in the paint, outscoring Eastern Kentucky 4626 around the rim.

SWAC WOMEN UAPB 89, TEXAS SOUTHERN 71

Four players finished with 10 points or more for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, which put a stop to a twogame slide by cruising in its Southweste­rn Athletic Conference home opener at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff.

Jelissa Reese had 20 points, and Maya Peat posted 19 points and 12 rebounds for UAPB (3-10, 1-2), which never fell behind and held a lead as big as 21 points in the second half. Demetria Shephard added 17 points, and Coriah Beck ended with 10 points, 7 assists and 3 steals.

The Golden Lions also shot a season-high 55.4% (31 of 56) from the floor, including 87% (7 of 8) in the fourth quarter to maintain a sizeable advantage.

Micah Gray had a banner day for Texas Southern (0-14, 0-3) by scoring a gamehigh 41 points. The freshman hit seven three-pointers, but the Tigers combined to shoot 9 of 27 (33.3%) in the second and third quarters, which kept them from making up much ground.

Texas Southern was also outrebound­ed 46-30 and gave up 48 points on the interior, with Peat doing most of the damage for the Golden Lions.
