ALCORN STATE 70, UAPB 67

Jeremiah Kendall scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Alcorn State (11-11, 8-2 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference) made enough free throws late to hold off the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff at the Whitney Health and Physical Education Complex in Lorman, Miss.

Treven Wade added 16 points while Keondre Montgomery, Dominic Brewton and Dekedran Thorn each had eight points for the Braves, who led 51-27 with 13:40 left before the Golden Lions surged back.

A three- pointer from Trejon Ware started a 39-15 blitz for UAPB (10-13, 6-4). Two free throws from Shaun Doss pulled the Golden Lions within 66-65 with 18 second remaining, but Alcorn State made all four of its free throw over the final nine seconds.

A.C. Curry had 18 points and Doss finished with 17 points for UAPB, which never led and trailed 36-23 at halftime. The Golden Lions shot 22 of 53 (41.5%) for the game, including 15 of 35 (41.7%) from beyond the threepoint line. The Braves finished 26 of 58 (44.8%).

UAPB 73, ALCORN STATE 61

Balanced scoring was the difference for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, which ran its winning streak to four games after picking up a road victory at Lorman, Miss.

Coriah Beck scored 17 points for UAPB (8-12, 6-4 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference), which had four players finish with at least 10 points. Raziya Potter came off the bench to put in 14 points, and Demetria Shephard churned out 13 points. Jelissa Reese followed suit with 10 points.

UAPB opened up a 43-31 lead by halftime and maintained a comfortabl­e margin throughout the second half. Alcorn State (8-13, 4-6) did get as close as 56-49 in the fourth quarter following a three-pointer from Tyginae Wright with 7:50 to go, but Beck answered with a 23-footer to hand control back to the Golden Lions for good.

Destiny Brown had 14 points and eight rebounds while Wright ended with 13 points for the Braves, who were outrebound­ed 45-38 and turned the ball over 21 times. Those turnovers led to 29 points for UAPB.

Zy’Nyia White added 12 points for Alcorn State.
