“Does closing off vents or doors in select rooms save me money on my utility bill?”

Answer: In days past closing off a room from your wood stove or fireplace to keep the rest of the house warm worked. But today your HVAC unit produces the same amount of air by pushing air throughout your home. Closing vents or doors will not save you money. But can end up costing you more money by causing your unit to work harder to stay warm or cool. Systems are designed to push a certain amount of air throughout your home causing pressure. Closing off vents and doors can cause your duct work to leak or crack the heat exchanger which can release deadly carbon monoxide into your home. This is a tasteless, colorless and odorless gas that’s undetectable to humans.

In the summer it can cause your air conditioner coils to freeze. Causing more harm to your system with high repair bills.

Keeping your interior doors open as often as possible helps keep air free flowing and your system in both summer and winter won’t have to strain or stress. When the system is under stress it can cause the life span to become shorter. And we all know what that means.
