Fayetteville tops Bentonville behind senior Harp’s 18 kills
6A-WEST VOLLEYBALL FAYETTEVILLE 3, BENTONVILLE 0
FAYETTEVILLE — Regan Harp finished with 18 kills and eight digs to help Fayetteville remain undefeated in 6A-West Conference volleyball with a 25-20, 25-11, 2521 win over Bentonville on Tuesday night.
Fayetteville (15-4, 10-0 6A-West) has now won six in a row without dropping a set. Bentonville, however, kept things close in the first and third sets before the Lady Tigers (11-5, 7-3) had their four-match winning streak snapped.
Fayetteville Coach Jessica Phelan said Harp was outstanding.
“She was able to play really clean volleyball tonight,” Phelan said. “She didn’t make a lot of offensive errors. You know 18 kills in three sets. I thought they did a good job of just maintaining composure.
“I felt like when the sets were close we continued to play with a lot of confidence, and that’s what you want to see as we build into that second half of conference play.”
Fayetteville trailed only briefly, but had trouble breaking away from the Lady Tigers in the first and third sets. Harp had five kills in a 5-1 run in the opening set to give the Lady Bulldogs a 16-10 advantage. Bentonville fired back to pull within 19-16, but Fayetteville went on to take the set.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped to a 9-3 lead in the second set and never really looked back. Fayetteville stayed in front in the third, but couldn’t ever pull away. It led 21-19 late and scored four of the last six points to close out the match.
Phelan also praised the work of freshman middle blocker Izzy Sategna at the net.
“Blocks are such a momentum changer and I think that’s something you can really build some momentum on when your team gets a big block at a key time,” Phelan said. “I feel good about it [the win]. I think for us heading into the second half we feel like we’re off to a good start on Monday and Tuesday and look for [Fort Smith] Northside on Thursday.”
Ella Bryan chipped in 10 kills for Fayetteville, while setter Quincy Schaffer dished out 30 assists. Setegna also contributed six blocks.
Lady Tigers Coach Allison Venable said Harp played well, but she also pointed to too many service errors by her team.
“We missed 13 serves and in that first set, that was the difference,” Venable said.
