-

January 20, 1940 – October 19, 2023 Betty L. Storey, age 83, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2023, in Fayetteville, Ark., at William Walker Hospice Home. She was born in Mountain View, Ark., to the late Marie Oyler Storey and the late Ernest (“Pete”) Storey. Betty graduated from Booneville High School in 1958. She thoroughly enjoyed her years in Booneville, making lifelong friends, leading the band as the Drum Majorette and graduating near the top of her class. Betty moved with her family to Fort Smith in 1970, where she spent a number of years at home, rearing four children with unparalleled enthusiasm and great gusto (as was her way). Betty then finished her college degree and, ultimately, obtained a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree from the University of Arkansas. Betty had a unique and seemingly boundless passion for serving those in need, especially children. She worked on behalf of children in need at the Department of Children and Family Services for 25 years. Betty is survived by four children: Karen Patterson Freeman of Fayetteville, Ark.; Steve Patterson (Jennifer) of Washington, D.C.; John Patterson of Fort Smith, Ark.; and Laura Patterson Cote (Jay) of Fayetteville, Ark. She found particular joy in her relationships with nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Betty is also survived by two sisters: Freddie Luther of Mountain View, Ark., and Barbara Toothaker (Ron) of Fayetteville, Ark. Two siblings preceded Betty in death: Earlene McNerlin and Eddie Storey.

A graveside service, honoring Betty’s life, will be held at Fairview Memorial Gardens cemetery in Fayetteville, Ark., on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at 10 a.m. Services and cremation are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Betty’s family would like to express special thanks to the devoted health care professionals in Northwest Arkansas, Houston, and Dallas for their compassionate care over the last days of her life. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting the American Cancer Society, CASA of Northwest Arkansas (3825 Cawood Lane, Springdale, Ark., 72762) or any other organization of your choosing that provides support for children in need.
