Meet Bobi, the World's Oldest Dog!

- By Karen Rice Official Kids Mag

How old is your dog? The oldest dog in the world just turned 31 years old this year. His name is Bobi and he lives in Portugal.

Bobi holds the Guinness World Record for being the oldest dog … ever! He is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, a breed of Portuguese dog.

His owner, Leonel Costa, who is now 38, was just 8 years old when Bobi was born. He was the only pup of his litter who survived.

Leonel recently threw a birthday party for him and more than 100 people came to wish Bobi a happy 31st birthday. They served meat and fish, with extra helpings for Bobi, who Leonel says only eats human food. Leonel soaks Bobi’s food in water to remove the seasonings.

His owner thinks Bobi has lived so long because of the calm and peaceful life he has out in the country. Bobi has always been free to roam the forest and farm around his house, and has never been on a chain or leash. He sleeps a lot and takes a nap by the fire on cold days.

Now that he’s older, it’s a little harder for Bobi to walk, so he mostly hangs out at home in his yard with four cats who are his friends.

Leonel takes Bobi to the vet for regular checkups. He was recently concerned about all the excitement Bobi experienced after he was awarded the Guiness World Record and journalists came from all over the world to take his picture.

“There were a lot of pictures taken and he had to get up and down many times,” Leonel said. “It wasn’t easy for him.”

The previous record holder was a cattle dog named Bluey, who worked as a cattle dog in Australia and lived to be 29 years old.
