Jessica Hale & Heidee Lyn Alsdorf
“Motion Picture Play: inHabit” is an invitation for individuals to participate in the spontaneous production of a dance film, co-facilitated by Jessica Hale and Heidee Lyn Alsdorf, both of Bentonville.
“Performance art is live and ephemeral, emphasizing the body and traditionally in relation to visual art,” Hale begins. “I focus on the body as a mover and dance maker. Engaging the audience on a physical and kinesthetic level, performance art extends into multimedia territory by incorporating elements of dance.”
In “Motion Picture Play: inHabit,” “the audience is the performer,” Alsdorf explains. “This project blends elements of performance, structured gameplay, and video making. As a docu/dance maker, JHale is inspired by the cathartic dance scenes in movies like ‘The First Wives Club’ and ‘The Breakfast Club.’ Our shared interests in clowning, serious game-play, and making art with friends bring us to ‘MPP: inHabit.’ We want to welcome the audience to have serious fun with us and to feel invigorated in their capacity to make choices about their bodies in space.
“We live in a world that actively incentivizes us to override the sensations and signals of our bodies, which makes it very challenging for us to make choices that are in alignment with our needs and desires,” she goes on. “Somatic-dance-play is a low-stakes place for me and my collaborators to be present with sensation and exercise our capacities for choice-fullness.
“That’s why my work is participatory and immersive.”
“As a filmmaker and choreographer, my work is influenced by cinema, mother nature, the particularity of people, and the desire for play,” Hale says. “My creation muses tend to be: Everyday people, Buster Keaton, Robin Williams and World Wrestling Entertainment. In no particular order.”
“Motion Picture Play: inHabit” is set for 2 p.m. Nov. 3.
