FAYETTEVILLE — Doreen Vorsanger,
age 92, passed away on March 28, 2024. She was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, and loyal friend. Doreen was born on May 21, 1931 in Grove City, Pa., to Haddon and Golden Bell (Buxton) Dawson.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Fred Vorsanger; her parents; brother, Hilton Dawson; and son, Mark Carter.
She is survived by her children, Diana Vorsanger Beran (Dave), Bruce Vorsanger (Ginny), and Bob Vorsanger (Katie); her grandchildren, Dave, Becky, Michael, Todd, and Corey; five great-grandchildren; as well as her devoted niece, Karen Laflin; and nephews, Mark Whitaker and David Whitaker.
Doreen met the love of her life, Fred, while in Washington, D.C. Fred whisked her away to the University of Arkansas where she learned to call the Hogs!
Doreen was an exceptional artist as well as the most gracious hostess. Her beautiful creations in both china painting and stained glass adorn a number of homes in the Fayetteville area. In addition, she was a tireless volunteer with the Washington County Unit of the American Cancer Society’s “Reach to Recovery” Program for breast cancer. Along with her dear friend, Dottie Wood, she was co-editor of a fundraising drive, a cookbook called Arkansas Cooking Somehow, Somewhat, Somewhere. Reach to Recovery was near and dear to her heart.
In 1996, Doreen received the Eagle Award from the Washington Regional Foundation, an honor given for healthcare leadership.
A special thank you to Norma Preston, Fred and Doreen’s long time care giver and good friend. We also appreciate the wonderful nurses and CNAs at Butterfield Trail Village Healthcare who provided great care for Doreen over the last 12 years. Thanks also to Washington Regional Hospice who over the last four weeks provided compassionate care.
A private service will be held at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
