Go on a magical pirate adventure with Tommy Terrific’s new magic show. His amazing tricks include a ship in a bottle, gold medallions, and a Jolly Roger flag magically hoisted in the air. Helpers in History Story Time A related story and program will be held every Thursday, focusing on historic helpers who are still working today, such as the Fort Smith Fire Department and Fort Smith Police Department (meet its mascot kitty, Officer Paws). Each story is followed by an activity or speaker, which may include a U.S. Marshal or nuns and nurses, recalling the earliest Mercy Hospital to today. 10-11:30 a.m. Thursdays

Museum Visits

Any day is fun and educationa­l for youngsters who visit the Fort Smith Museum of History. There are many hands-on opportunit­ies such as “ciphering” on a chalk slate in the Victorian-era replica classroom, rowing a keelboat modeled after the boats on which the first military men arrived and banging the gavel in the Judge Isaac C. Parker courtroom exhibit. Families can purchase a sweet old-fashioned treat in the museum’s real soda fountain.

RIVER VALLEY NATURE CENTER 8300 Wells Lake Road Fort Smith

Every day, the River Valley Nature Center offers hiking on four miles of beautiful, safe trails rich in bird and wildlife watching. Woods, open spaces and lake views open up along the way. Inside the center, see live animals and other nature exhibits, including feeding times and ranger-led education. Learn about local ecosystems and wildlife frequently seen, including deer, more than 140 bird species, woodland mammals and aquatic creatures such as fish, turtles and snakes. On Wells Lake, there are scheduled opportunit­ies to borrow fishing gear or paddle the center’s kayaks and canoes (with life jackets.) Archery equipment and instructio­n are available. Take your own gear and bait or bait is for sale in the center to fish for largemouth bass, rainbow trout, catfish, sunfish, bluegill and more. Activities are offered for all ages that teach us to value, understand and enjoy our natural state’s beauty and resources. Admission is free.

FORT SMITH TROLLEY MUSEUM

Ride a real electric streetcar through downtown Fort Smith and tour the rolling rail stock at the Fort Smith Trolley Museum. It’s a step back in time when the city had a robust public transporta­tion system based on trolley tracks. Board the trolley at the Fort Smith Museum of History or at the Trolley Museum a few blocks away, where kids can see a locomotive and several kinds of railcars. Ride the retired streetcars past many historic locations such as the Fort Smith National Cemetery and National Historic Site. $4 Adult; $2 per child. Dancers learn pieces of choreograp­hy from The Nutcracker and other ballets performed at WAB with a showing on the last day. This camp is a fun way for your dancer to see what is coming next in their dance training.
