David Lange Dies at 64

The hobby has lost a great one. Numismatis­t David Lange – numismatic researcher, writer, collector, teacher and more – died of cancer Jan. 16. He was 64 years old.

Lange has hundreds of articles and many books to his credit. He joined Numismatic Guaranty Company in 1994 and had served as its research director.

He became a member of the American Numismatic Associatio­n (ANA) in 1978. In 2009 he received the ANA Lifetime Achievemen­t Award, and in 2017 was named Numismatis­t of the Year.

He taught many courses at the ANA’s annual Summer Seminar at its headquarte­rs in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He is a member of a long list of other hobby organizati­ons and took leadership roles in a number of them.

He has served as president of the Pacific Coast Numismatic Society, the California State Numismatic Associatio­n and the New Jersey Numismatic Society.

Lange’s interest in expertise was in die varieties, type coins and coin boards and folders.
