Proof Quarter Found in Cash Drawer

-

Found this 2003-S Missouri Statehood quarter in our cash drawer at work: a copper-nickel proof coin. It amazes me how these get into circulation, I seem to run across one about once a year or so.

Daryl Conley Truth or Consequences, N.M. I have written in previously on my coin finds for the year. For 2023, the total finds were 10 rolls of 40 percent silver Kennedy halves, one 1942 Walking Liberty half, three Franklin halves, 15 1964 Kennedy halves, one 1970 Kennedy half, one roll of 2008 Kennedy proof halves, two 1987 Kennedy halves, and three rolls of various 2003 current Kennedy NIFC halves, five silver Washington quarters, 27 “W” quarters, 17 proof quarters, eight “S”mint quarters, two Washington Crossing the Delaware quarters with the full crown die chip on the hat, 92 silver Roosevelt dimes, eight Mercury dimes, four silver Canadian dimes, six Buffalo nickels, 15 silver war nickels, one 1903 Liberty V nickel, 42 wheat pennies, 2 1957 $ 1 Silver Certificates, six 1935 $ 1 Silver Certificates. The two best finds for the year were a 1950- D Jefferson nickel, the first I have found, and four 40 percent silver Ike dollars, two from 1972 and two from 1973. I regularly search probably $1,000 worth of rolls every week. Overall, I would have to say it was a productive year coin- roll hunting.

I find so much enjoyment from searching change, coins and currency from strange serial numbers to Mint State quarters from 20 years ago that fall into the my hands and the $100 stars that most can’t save.

I am a believer in the statement that there are $$$ in pocket change. I am very new and not tremendously versed in the hobby of coin collecting. I noticed at the end of the article you wrote about a find in Virginia, that you said to let you know what we find in our pocket change. I have been at it for three weeks now. I have one pocket change find I wanted to share with you. I don’t know what it would officially be called, but I would call it a “double die break with retained CUD.” The coin is a 2022-D Lincoln penny with one pretty good sized break that begins at the inside edge of the rim in the 1 o’clock position and goes down past the “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The smaller break is at approximately the 9 o’clock position. Neither break appears to fully involve the rim, so the breaks may be considered interior die breaks. Thanks for letting us share our finds with you.
