UNCG softball remains perfect in SoCon with 4-2 victory over ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team is now the only Southern Conference (SoCon) team undefeated in the league with a 4-2 victory over ETSU on Saturday afternoon.

Samford fell to Furman today and is now 8-1 in the conference.

The two wins extend UNCG’s win streak to six and its SoCon streak to 12.

The Spartans have now won 16-straight regularsea­son games against SoCon opponents dating back to the 2021 season and 19-straight overall games against conference foes, including post-season games.

In the last 17 games, UNCG has marked 16 of them as wins.

The Spartans have hit at least one home run in 35 games this season.

Graduate student Jordan Gontram crushed a threerun home run in the top of the first for the Spartans’ 83rd homer of the season.

Junior Morgan Scott saw her first base runner in the bottom of the second, but kept the Bucs off their toes and scoreless through five innings.

Sophomore Anna White added to the Spartans’ tally in the top of the seventh with her first-collegiate RBI and double for a 4-1 advantage.

· Jordan Gontram is in sole possession of second place with 48 home runs and eighth with 131 RBI.

· Makenna Matthijs is third with 171 runs, fourth with 48 doubles and 160 RBI, sixth with 37 home runs and 720 at bats, ninth with 82 walks, and eighth with 216 hits.

· Delaney Cumbie is second with 120 walks, sixth with 122 runs, and tied for 10th with 29 home runs.

· Scott is fourth with 523 strikeouts and tied for eighth with 47 wins.

HOW IT HAPPENED

· Scott struck out seven in her 19th win of the season and 20th complete game of the year.

· This is the third time this season that Gontram has homered in two or more consecutiv­e games.

· ETSU cut the deficit to 3-1 on Andrea Sarhatt’s fielder’s choice in the bottom of the sixth scoring Ally Chernek.

· Riley Nayadley singled in the bottom of the seventh to bring in ETSU’s second run.

· The Bucs’ Allison Farr and Whitley Arnott combined for four strikeouts.

· Sarhatt and Chernak stole one base each.

· Cameron Young and Kelly Warren went 2-for-3 at the plate.

NOTES

· Gontram has a team best 14 home runs, a new single season-high.

· This was Gontram’s 10th game with multiple RBI.

· Matthijs hit her sixth double of the season.

· This was the 16th game this season with at least two doubles.
