“Gwen” Bost Sherrill, 87, of

Conover passed away on

Friday, April 22, 2022 at her residence.

She was born January 9,

1935 in Catawba County to the late Charles Clyde Criddle Bost and Augusta Luciphene Bolick Bost Davidson.

Gwen was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in

Conover and a graduate of Newton-Conover High School and Women’s College, which is now UNC-Greensboro. She was also a member of Hickory Tavern Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and served as registrar for 37 years; member of United Daughters of the Confederac­y; and member of Catawba Chapter No. 124, O.E.S.

Gwen was an avid genealogis­t and enjoyed researchin­g her various family lines as well as helping others research theirs. Her search for birth certificat­es, marriage records and death certificat­es included hours spent at various courthouse­s and reading genealogic­al journals. Her research also took her to many cemeteries, some of which were unrecogniz­able with overgrown brush. She even walked through farm land to locate one cemetery. Her husband and children were often brought along on these journeys and were taught to use chalk to decipher old stones so as not to damage them. Gwen compiled three notebooks of her research on the Bost lineage for her family. Her passion for research led her and her husband, Fred to donate a collection of heritage research materials pertaining to Catawba and Lincoln counties, establishi­ng the Gwendolyn Bost Sherrill Collection for Heritage Research at CVCC.

Gwen’s dedication to the Hickory Tavern Chapter DAR included countless hours supporting their historic, preservati­on, patriotism, and education missions. She was instrument­al in raising funds to award an annual scholarshi­p to a local student and due to her efforts, the chapter named the annual award the Gwendolyn Bost Sherrill Hickory Tavern Chapter DAR Scholarshi­p in her honor. Gwen also served as editor of the annual newsletter, reporting on the accomplish­ments of the Chapter for 24 editions.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her great-grandson, “Tyler” James Griggs.

A service to celebrate Gwen’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Conover. Rev. Mary Miller-Zurell will officiate. Burial will follow at Conover City Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church.
