Red Hawks split Region 10 series with No. 3 Rhinos
HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team split a weekend series with third-ranked Gaston College on Saturday and Sunday at Henkel-Alley Field.
The Red Hawks’ record is now 28-22 overall and 20-11 in conference games.
Gaston 8, Catawba Valley

The Rhinos scored five runs early and added a pair of runs late en route to defeating the Red Hawks in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at HenkelAlley Field.
Jack Stevens paced Catawba Valley on offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI. Zack Summerville also record two hits at the plate, while Jackie Jimenez recorded one RBI.
On the mound, Red Hawk pitchers Jordan Davis, Bailey McGinnis and Aiken Minton combined to strike out 11 Rhino batters in Saturday’s opening contest.

8, Gaston 6
The Red Hawks erased an early 4-0 deficit, coming back to knock off the third-ranked Rhinos in Saturday’s nightcap.
Walker Waters went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI, while Jackie Jimenez added two RBI and a home run.
Falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, CVCC scored in five-straight innings, plating one run in the first inning, two in the second inning, one each in the third and fourth innings and three in the fifth inning to power ahead for the conference victory.
Red Hawks starting pitcher Chance Daquila earned the win on the mound, improving to 5-3 on the season. He allowed five hits, four runs, no walks and struck out two batters in three innings of work. Jonah Milchuck closed out the final four innings on the mound for CVCC.

The Rhinos capitalized on a ninth-inning error by the Red Hawks to onerun win Sunday’s “rubber match” at Henkel-Alley Field.
Catawba Valley tallied 13 hits in the series finale, including three each off the bats of Reece Landmark and Zack Summerville.
Landmark also drove in a team-high three runs and recorded two home runs in the contest. Teammate Jack Stevens also hit a home run — one his two hits — and drove in two runs.
On the mound, Red Hawk starter Bryson Hammer went five innings, allowing six hits, five earned runs, three walks and striking out seven batters.
Andrew Dye and Darwin Ruiz closed out the final four innings for CVCC, combined to allow three hits, two earned runs, three walks and striking out four batters.
The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team returns to action on Wednesday for a home conference doubleheader against Guilford Tech. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Henkel-Alley Field.
