Troopers locate and apprehend Burke County murder suspect

On Thursday, April 28, at approximat­ely 3:00 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol located and apprehende­d a suspect wanted for murder in Burke County. As troopers patrolled the area searching for the subject, a trooper assigned to Burke county observed the suspect vehicle traveling on I-40 East.

A traffic stop was conducted on a 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300E near US 321. Multiple troopers converged and took the suspect, Nolan Andre Smith, 22, of Conover into custody without incident. Smith was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Burke County Sheriff’s Office in connection with the April 22 killing of a man in Connelly Springs.

He was alone in the vehicle. At the scene, Smith was turned over to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
