ULF DREBER
Ulf Dreber, exchange student at Newton-Conover High School
1960-1961 from Sweden, passed away in Stockholm on November
12 from chronic leukemia at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife, Kerstin Moberg, two sons, and two grandchildren.
While attending NCHS he lived with Eddie and Helen Pulliam, and their son, Ted, and daughter
Margie. He was an active and popular member of the class of 1961, participating in the band, Key Club, and track team, among other activities. That year’s annual said of him: “Because of Ulf’s remarkable personality and the interest he has displayed in American life, he has placed himself in the hearts of the students of NewtonConover High School.”
On his return to Sweden, he spent most of his career as a management consultant with firms such as the international consulting firm, Coopers & Lybrand, and later formed his own company. His true passion, however, was jazz. Particularly after retirement, he played soprano saxophone with ten different groups, some with people thirty years younger, and one of his groups traveled twice to New Orleans to appear in the city’s annual jazz festival.
Ulf kept in touch with a number of the ‘61 class members through the years, and made several trips back to Newton for visits and class reunions. He was a great clarinet player - later saxophone player, and enjoyed playing in the NCHS pep band during high school. He was so friendly and well-loved by the class and the community, that his memory will live on for years to come.
His funeral will be held on December 12 in Sweden.
