Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Shutsout UVA-Wise, 7-0
HICKORY, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team earned its third consecutive conference win by sweeping UVA-Wise, 7-0.
Starting in doubles, LR won all three doubles lines, winning by the score of 6-3. There was a bit of a shakeup for the Bears as Alicia Wahlberg and Nellie Wahlberg played together at the No. 1 line for the first time this season, while Runa Muderrisoglu and Claudia Orsini played at the No. 2 spot.
With the confident 1-0 lead, Muderrisoglu once again dialed up another straightset victory by winning No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2. The freshman has now won seven-straight matches which is the secondlongest on the team.
Following up Muderrisoglu was her doubles teammate, Orsini. The sophomore from Soisy-sous-Montmorency, France clinched her first singles victory from the No. 3 line in straight-set fashion, winning 6-4, 6-1.
To clinch the match for the Bears was senior Alicia Wahlberg, who continues to excel this season with a perfect 11-0 record in singles. At the No. 2 spot, the Stockholm,
Sweden native cruised through her match with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 result.
In the only three-set match of the day, Alexa Allison was able to pull out the victory to return to her winning ways.
The freshman took the opening set, 6-3, before her opponent, Amelia Monteith, responded with a 6-2 second-set win. In the final set, the Conover, N.C. native clutched out the 6-3 result to get her sixth win of the season at No. 5 singles.
Meanwhile at No. 4 singles, Nellie Wahlberg earned her fifth-straight victory with another dominating performance of 6-2, 6-1. Then in No. 6 singles, Dawson Clifford secured the final point of the day with an 8-3 win in the proset style match.
UP NEXT: The LenoirRhyne Women’s Tennis Team will continue its fivematch home stand with a contest against Newberry on Wednesday, March 20. The match is scheduled to be played at 2 p.m. from the
YMCA of Catawba Valley.
