Town of Long View dedicates David “Coach” Elder Memorial Playground

Mona Laverne Schronce, 76, of

Maiden, NC passed away on April

27, 2024. Born in Catawba County on December 14, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Nell Whisnant Schronce. She was preceded in death by a nephew, Bradley Schronce, a niece, Alison Schronce, and a sister-in-law

Frances Schronce.

Mona was a 1966 graduate of

Maiden High School and graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University in 1970. She served as a social worker for Catawba County until her retirement. Mona cherished her family and friends and was a loving daughter, sister, and aunt. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors: Brothers: Larry Schronce and wife Martha of Hickory, Edward Schronce and wife Patsy of Kings Mountain, Nelson Schronce of Conover; Nieces: Edie Greenlee, Carrie Ford, and Kim Barr; Nephew: James Schronce; Great-nieces and nephews: Sarah Catherine, Rebecca, Mattie, Jackson, Caroline, Adam, Charlotte, and Kai; special Neighbors: The Abernathy Family and Steve and Richie Fox,

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Wednesday, May 1st, 2024 at 3:00 P.M. in the Burke Mortuary Chapel, Newton, NC. Pastor Benjamin Ramsaur will be officiatin­g and Reverend Ronnie Parker assisting. A private burial will follow.

VISITATION: Wednesday, May 1st, 2024 prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:45 P.M. in the parlor of Burke Mortuary, Newton. NC.

The Town of Long View celebrated the dedication of the David “Coach” Elder Memorial Playground with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, April 27, 2027, at 10:00 a.m. The event, held at the Long View Recreation Center, marked the culminatio­n of community efforts to honor the legacy of Coach Elder and provide a new recreation­al space for residents.

The playground, named in memory of Coach David Elder, a beloved figure in the Long View community, features state-of-the-art equipment and amenities for children of all ages. Coach Elder, known for his dedication to youth sports and community service, inspired generation­s of Long View residents with his passion for athletics and mentorship.

“The David ‘Coach’ Elder Memorial Playground is a testament to Coach Elder’s enduring impact on our community,” said Mayor Marla Thompson. “It serves as a reminder of his commitment to our youth and his belief in the power of sports to bring people together. We are honored to dedicate this playground in his memory.”

The dedication ceremony was attended by members of

Coach Elder’s family, town officials, community leaders, and residents. The event featured remarks from Mayor Thompson, members of the Elder family, and others who shared memories of Coach Elder and his contributi­ons to Long View, sports, and education.

Following the ceremony, attendees were invited to enjoy the new playground, which includes swings, slides, climbing structures, and other play features designed to promote physical activity and imaginativ­e play. The playground is located adjacent to the Long View Recreation Center and is open to the public during regular park hours.

The David “Coach” Elder Memorial Playground is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to serving others and inspiring young people to reach their full potential. The Town of Long View is proud to honor Coach Elder’s memory and provide a lasting legacy for future generation­s.
