Old House Journal

Paper to inspire and digital to carry,

-

that’s what I’ve come to rely on with my magazine subscriptions. I continue to subscribe to print editions because paper showing up in the mailbox is tangible. The arrival of the magazine makes me look. And I can read print anywhere, even when someone else has snatched the iPad. But increasingly I want portable digital editions of magazines that provide incentive, instructions, and sources—my fitness and cooking magazines, for example.

When I was in the midst of restoring my 1904 house, the Internet was young; I kept three-ring binders filled with magazine tearsheets. Hallelujah, that’s no longer necessary. Whole publications are archived right there on your tablet. Without carrying binders around, you can whip out favorite images and samples when you’re shopping or meeting with a designer. Even better, digital editions are “built” to be interactive. They let you archive back issues, bookmark favorites, and go deeper into tangents and sources that wouldn’t fit on the printed page.

So I’m thrilled to announce that OHJ subscriptions are available three ways. Buy a stand-alone print subscription or an interactive iPad subscription; or buy both for a discounted combo price of $29.95. Already a print subscriber? Now you can add on a digital sub for the iPad for just $4.99. If you use OHJ as a renovation tool, I think you’ll find the upgrade is worth it—our art department does a great job with interactive content and exclusive features. Easy-to-read text is formatted for the screen. Get videos, slide shows, and step-by-step how-tos; hone in on an image; link directly to resources without going to a separate web page. I love print, but I have to say it’s fun to play with the digital edition.
