house & garden

-

Millwork, doors and windows, retrofits, roofing, flooring, outside & more.

a house built of related components speaks eloquently. Decorating is ephemeral and can be more personal, eclectic, or mixed. But key elements—the entry door, porch parts, fireplaces, window trim—are part of the architecture, and will be difficult or expensive to replace in the future. These all should speak the same language.

Where do you begin? The house itself, and similar neighboring houses, provide the best guidance. Sometimes there is more than one theme; for example, a predominantly Arts & Crafts house may have Colonial Revival woodwork in the dining room. Go ahead and honor the original intention, but pick one dominant theme in any additions (or replacements) of major elements. When you stick to the architectural style, what you add will look “as though it’s always been there.”

Flooring, too, may be a major investment to be considered early in a renovation. Many choices are available today, from reclaimed lumber and true linoleum to engineered products—plus stone and tile.

Mechanical systems don’t generally fall within the scope of a design book. Some innovations, though, offer practical or aesthetic advantages peculiar to old houses, so the editors describe them here: heating and cooling retrofits, efficient fireplace inserts, etc.

Find, too, elements for landscape and garden that round out the impression, from trellises to urns.
