Orlando Sentinel (Sunday)

Ready for Tuesday, voters? I am. It’s the best.

- Scott Maxwell Sentinel Columnist By the time early voting ends Sunday, a record number of Floridians will have voted in an offyear election. We’re talking 4 million or so. It’s awfully impressive. However, I will not be among them. I will vote on Tuesd

There’s something special about that shared experience.

I’m certainly not trying to take anything away from all you early and mail-in voters. I mean, there are millions of you. If I ticked you all off, you’d swarm me like a scene out of World War Z.

Plus, the candidates and parties don’t want you to wait. They think you’ll get tied up on Election Day and forget to actually vote … especially if you’re young and easily distracted.

But I like to wait until the final day, partly because I want to make sure I have every single bit of information possible.

If a candidate gets arrested for bedding a goat the day before the election, I’d like to know. If one announces a last-minute cam-

paign plan to legalize meth, that might impact my decision.

Heck, we’ve had elections where the candidate actually died right before the election. Some voters felt uncomfortable voting for a corpse and called to say they wanted their ballot back.

I felt like the old lady in the Geico commercial, telling them: “That’s not how any of this works.”

Last week at the gym, a gentleman I like fussed at me for printing my recommendations on the amendments three-and-a-half weeks before the election. He’d already cast his ballot — and said the piece would’ve have changed his mind on an issue or two.

“But you were the one who decided to vote before you had all the information,” I said with an enthusiastic smile that he returned with less enthusiasm.

Similarly, several readers wrote in a couple of weeks ago to say:

I’d always respond: “I have wonderful news! This is a solvable problem! Cancer, AIDS, Allegiant airlines’ baggage policy — those are all things humans haven’t yet figured out. But you waiting until you have all the information you need? That’s achievable, my friend.”

The best thing about all these questions and record number of voters is that it reflects a real urgency and passion for civic participation.

Do you know what the most-read thing on the Sentinel’s website was in October?

Usually it’s pieces like: “Burmese Python caught buying multi-day pass to Epcot’s Food & Wine Fest.” Or “Mike Bianchi: If UCF isn’t crowned national champion after the second game this season, it’s proof the BCS is rigged.”

But last month, it was my column breaking down the amendments.

Yeah, the amendments. I couldn’t drum up a more boring topic if I tried. (And if you read my stuff regularly, you know I’ve tried.)

I don’t highlight the reader interest in the amendments column as a testament to me. It’s a testament to voters. They public policy information. They crave it.

They’re so interested in getting this election right that they’re using their valuable time to try to understand why Tallahassee appointees combined proposed bans on oil-drilling and e-cigarette usage into a single amendment. (Spoiler alert: There is no good reason.)

I find all of that heightened interest incredibly encouraging.

Now, I certainly understand that not everyone can vote on Tuesday. Maybe you’ll be out of town. Maybe your schedule doesn’t allow. If either one of those things is the case, I sure hope you’ll make your way to an early voting location this weekend.

But I’ll be there in person on Tuesday for an event I find more patriotic and fulfilling then any flagslathered campaign rally, TV ad or sporting event.

It’s an experience that is thoughtful, emotional, sometimes even spiritual — one of the few ways Americans can make their voices heard above a cacophony of political noise. flalottery.com
