Cure Bowl duo fall just short of 1,000 yards

Louisiana junior running back Elijah Mitchell entered the Cure Bowl needing just 41 yards to reach the 1,000-yard mark this season.

But it wasn't meant to be as Mitchell managed just 26 yards on six carries, leaving him 15 yards shy of 1,000.

He did score his team-leading 13th rushing touchdown in the third quarter. Had Mitchell reached 1,000 yards, he and fellow junior Trey Ragas would have become only the third duo in program history to accomplish the feat.

Tulane wide receiver Darnell Mooney also fell short of a 1,000-yard season.

The senior needed yards to hit 1,000, but one catch for six yards.

Weather issues: Thundersto­rms throughout Central Florida forced Cure Bowl officials to cancel a pep rally Friday and may have hindered bowl game attendance Saturday. The game drew an announced crowd of 19,066.

Helping others: While the Cure Bowl primarily focuses on helping fight breast cancer, it's not the only charitable cause that Tulane and Louisiana players assisted during bowl week.

Both teams did helped Feeding Children Everywhere package meals for those in need.

Main donation: During the Cure Bowl, AutoNation and bowl officials presented Dr. Annette Khaled from UCF's College of Medicine with a $1,145,833 check. The bowl has donated more than $3.5 million during its first four years to benefit those raising awareness about breast cancer and fighting the disease.
