Dynamic ‘D’ key to their success

The UCF women’s basketball team’s relentless effort so far this season is paying off.

The Knights (13-2, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) are reaping the rewards of a smothering defense.

UCF used that pressure to earn a commanding 62-49 win at rival USF (10-6, 1-1 AAC) Tuesday.

Now the Knights are pushing to build on the success when they host Cincinnati Sunday at CFE Arena. The game will air on ESPNU.

A limited supply of peach melba will be on sale at concession stands in honor of National Peach Melba Day, and Flying Hounds Frisbee Trick Dog Show will perform at halftime.

The Knights expect to be challenged by the improved Bearcats (9-6, 1-1 AAC) and will try to use their intense defensive energy to take control of the contest.

“When you watch our team, you don’t understand how that is to press the whole game. That’s a lot of running,” UCF coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson said.

She noted few Knights run more than Kay Kay Wright, who led all scorers against USF with 20 points. It was her sixth 20-point game of the season.

“Momentum is always something that’s good,” Wright said when asked about building on the win over USF. “We have a lot of confidence from that win. So just kind of build on it, keep getting better.”

Abrahamson-Henderson said Cincinnati is playing with renewed energy.

Wright said the Knights will not relax after the big win over USF.

“We have a great opponent coming in here, Cincinnati on Sunday,” she said. “So We’re going to approach that game just as a USF or UConn game. So we’re going to fix some things that we didn’t do swell on, so we’re going to get better.”
