Struggling for basic needs
Ricky Ly, A new United Way report finds that almost half of Central Florida households struggle to cover their basic needs. Forty-seven percent of households in Orange County struggled to afford child care, housing, food, health care and transportation costs. The majority are classified as “working poor,” or people who have jobs but can’t afford the costs of living. It is no surprise as many of the new jobs in the area pay under a livable wage. How can our community come together to address poverty and make sure that everyone can live and prosper in Central Florida?
Guns and schools
Muhammad Musri,
One day before the one-year anniversary of the massacre at the high school in Parkland, a Farnell Middle School student told her teacher that she saw a man in black carrying a gun. Within minutes, the middle school and nearby Bryant Elementary School were placed under lockdown as 75 deputies and security officers searched the school. Terrified students and parents had to endure the nerve-racking experience. The student is now facing felony charges after she admitted that she lied and it was a hoax! If the Florida legislature doesn’t introduce strict gun laws, this incident will continue to repeat.
