Would Chase Smith call out Trump?

-

Margaret Chase Smith, a Republican from Skowhegan, Maine, served in both the U.S. House and Senate from 1940 through 1973.

Speaking as a Republican, she once declared, “I don’t want to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the four horsemen of calumny-fear, ignorance, bigotry and smear.”

Oh, senator, today’s Republicans worship at the altar of just such a patron saint. Their leader fears truth, certain foreigners and strong women.

This leader ignores science, history, advice and the lessons of war. This leader invites bigotry as easily as he breathes the air. This leader smears all who dare rival his twisted version of Americanism.

Would Margaret Chase Smith have called him out? Perhaps. Will you? Or will you live with this Republican leader and his second term wrath from which this country may not so soon recover?
