Death toll up to 2,447

The number of positive COVID-19 cases in Florida hit 55,424 on Saturday as 34 new fatalities reported by the state health department brought the death toll to 2,447.

There were 927 new cases reported statewide, and among them were 95 new cases in Central Florida.

The region now has a total of 5,864 cases. That includes 31 new cases in Orange County for a total of 1,976; 28 in Polk for 1,005; five in Volusia for 730; 10 in Osceola for 698; three in Seminole for 484; 11 in Brevard for 420; and seven in Lake for 298. With no new cases reported Saturday in Sumter County, the case total there stands at 253.

One new death was reported in Volusia: an 81-year-old man with no travel history but who came in contact with someone with coronaviru­s.

The region’s death toll now stands at 209, with the most in Polk County at 55, followed by Orange with 41, Volusia with 38, Osceola with 19, Sumter with 17, Lake with 15, and Seminole and Brevard with 12 each.

South Florida, home to 29% of Florida’s population, remains the hardesthit region, accounting for 55% of cases with 30,791 total. That number includes 410 new cases reported Saturday among Miami-Dade (17,826), Broward (7,067) and Palm Beach (5,898) counties.

South Florida also has the most deaths at 1,350, which is 55% of the state’s fatalities. The threecount­y region logged an additional 22 reported deaths Saturday.

The number of tests administer­ed in the state since the outbreak began is 995,886, with 94.4% of those negative.
