Black Hammock Wilderness Area: Scenic hikes and boardwalks

- Patrick Connolly Central Florida Explorer

Take a shady walk among Southern magnolias and cabbage palm trees, traversing boardwalks along the trails of the 700-acre Black Hammock Wilderness Area in Seminole County.

A 4.5-mile loop designed for hikers, cyclists and equestrians takes visitors around the outdoor space, set in Central Florida wilderness near Geneva and Oviedo. Cicadas and songbirds provide a natural soundtrack for visitors as they meander through the mixed hardwood swamp that comprises the first section of the trail. In the trees, it’s possible to spot small avian residents of the wilderness area, including woodpeckers.

After about a mile, the path opens into a sunny pine flatwoods environment with some looser sand on the trail. Watch for snakes on the ground, but also keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, the occasional turtle or birds of prey in this area of the preserve.

The loop continues into a breezy sand pine scrub habitat set in the open sun. It’s important to bring a hat and water, even though the full hike won’t take more than two or three hours.

Seminole County acquired the property in an effort to preserve habitat on the shores of Lake Jesup and protect recharge areas for the Geneva Bubble, the local aquifer.

In protecting the space, remember to take nothing but pictures, kill nothing but time and leave nothing but footprints.
