Oak Ridge, Dr. Phillips win

- Staff report

Playing at a pace rarely seen at the high school level, Oak Ridge won convincingly 83-66 against St. Petersburg High in Saturday’s Access Sports TV Invitational boys basketball event at Orlando Christian Prep.

Ty Johnson, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, scored 20 points and senior Fabio Basili had 19 to lead the Pioneers (16-6) on a day when all three Orlando area teams prevailed against out-ofarea squads. Elijah Elliott, a sophomore, added 14 points in the win. Oak Ridge, ranked No. 6 in Class 7A, led 74-47 through three quarters and played mostly subs in the final eight minutes.

The Green Devils dropped to 17-5.

Junior power forward Sean Stewart scored 25 points and No. 3 7A Windermere pulled out a 61-58 win against Bradenton Southeast (12-6).

Chris Nurse added 17 points for the Wolverines (18-4), who held a 17-4 lead after one quarter before the Seminoles used some torrid 3-point shooting to get back into the game. Windermere found itself down by 1 point in the fourth quarter but responded with a 7-0 run to regain control.

No. 1 2A OCP (17-4) also won a tight game, 45-41, against No. 6 3A Ocala Trinity Catholic (18-5). Seniors A.J. Brown and Ven-Allen Lubin scored 14 and 12 points, respectively, to lead the Warriors. OCP broke a 41-41 tie on a steal and score by Isaiah Brown.

Oviedo avenges loss to Brantley: Matching up against Lake Brantley for the second time in 10 days, Oviedo boys basketball coach Jason Vallery made sure to not make the same mistake twice.

Brantley (18-4) won the previous meeting 55-49 on Jan. 19 thanks in large part to star center Jack Klinger. In Saturday’s game, the Lions (18-5) held the 6-foot-8 big man to just 9 points, and Oviedo avenged its previous loss with a 59-50 win in the championship of the FCA Honoring Legends Invitational at Boone High School.

“We lost to Lake Brantley a couple of weeks ago,” Vallery said. “Jack Klinger was a big deal for them in that game, so the emphasis was to take him away.”

The Lions got strong performances from two of their star players. Dawson Barr, a junior, scored a gamehigh 24 points, making 6 of 9 attempts from 3-point range. Following the game, Barr received the Ivan Repass MVP award for his play in the tournament.

Sophomore Ryan Blount scored 12 points and received the Steve Jucker Hustle Award after the game.

“They’ve been leading us all season long,” Vallery said. “They’re first and second in scoring, rebounding, steals, assists. They’re a big part of what we do.”

Oviedo entered the tournament on a 3-game losing streak and exits it on a 3-game winning streak.

“In reality, we didn’t play bad last week; we just played good teams,” Vallery said. “We played three more good teams this week and we’re blessed to come out on the right side.”

In earlier games, host Boone defeated Trinity Prep 73-57, Seminole topped Winter Park 70-43 and Central Florida Christiana Academy took home third place with a 73-37 blowout win over Lake Howell.
