Foundation, Hagerty, Lake Mary win titles
Foundation Academy won its first state championship in any team sport and perennial powers Hagerty and Lake Mary also captured state titles in competitive cheer this week.
The Florida High School Athletic Association’s state finals were contested at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on the Gainesville campus of the University of Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Lake Mary won its sixth consecutive state championship. All of those victories have come in the ExtraLarge Tumbling division.
Hagerty won its sixth championship since 2014 to continue a string of success that has seen the program place first or second in the FHSAA finals for 10 years in a row.
This time, Hagerty edged Winter Park by one-tenth of a point, 86.20 to 86.10, to win the Class 2A ExtraLarge championships. The Huskies had been runners-up behind Winter Park in regional competition a week earlier.
Foundation won the 1A
Large Non-Tumbling classification on Wednesday.
Bishop Moore was the runner-up in the Class 1A Medium division.
DeLand, Lake Brantley, Lake Nona and West Orange all earned third-place finishes in 2A competition.
Competitive cheer divisions are determined by the number of participants. For instance the Large Non-Tumbling division is for teams with 17-20 members.
Point totals are determined by a panel of judges who observe and score each routine.
