Make a date to see your doctor

Best Valentine’s Day gift? Staying healthy for your partner

-

Every year, couples celebrate Valentine’s Day by eating an expensive dinner or sending a fancy bouquet of roses.

But what could be more heartfelt than ensuring you’re going to be with your loved one for a long time by using Valentine’s Day as a reminder to make a date to see your doctor?

People often say they avoid check-ups and uncomfortable diagnostic exams because they feel fine or they don’t have time.

But instead of viewing important screening tests as an inconvenience, think of them as a thoughtful gift to your partner. By staying healthy, you extend your own quality of life — and your loved one’s, too.

“Caregiving is expensive, time-consuming and emotionally exhausting. Taking small steps to stay healthy shows your loved one you care,” says Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a board-certified urologist and fellowship-trained robotic surgeon with Orlando Health Medical Group Urology.

Taking care of your health has another benefit, too: It can improve your love life.

As we age, we can encounter issues such as erectile dysfunction and vaginal dryness, both of which can derail physical intimacy. Such mood-busters can cause depression and anxiety in the long run — and even mask larger health concerns. Regular screenings for blood pressure, hormone levels and prostate health help ward off potential problems.

“Telling someone you love them is wonderful, heartfelt gifts are always appreciated and fancy dinners are a treat,” Dr. Brahmbhatt says.

“But if you truly want to show you care, nothing beats taking an active role in ensuring your happily-ever-after is healthy.”
