Abortion ban echoes Jim Crow laws

States of the Confederacy responded to defeat in the Civil War and emancipation of slaves by instituting Jim Crow race laws to undo many of the gains made by Black people during Reconstruction. This week, Gov. DeSantis responded to the emancipation of women by signing a Jim Crow-like abortion law to undo many of the gains made by women since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled abortion legal.

Like the Jim Crow race laws, the abortion laws are destined to fail. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
