Pride earn draw at home late vs. KC

- By Austin David

It came down to the final kick of the game, but the Orlando Pride pulled out a point in the most dramatic fashion.

After going up early in the second half, the Pride conceded two goals in the final 10 minutes of the game and looked to have blown their lead. In the last moments, though, Kylie Strom was fouled in the box and Toni Pressley took the penalty to tie the game 2-2 in the 96th minute against Kansas City to salvage a point at Exploria Stadium on Saturday night.

The Pride had a good start to the match, with Sydney Leroux getting on a ball in the box that was headed right to Current keeper AD Franch.

Orlando forward Leah Pruitt had the best chance of the first half, however, as she stole the ball from Taylor Leach and rounded Franch in goal but clanged her shot off the post.

As the half looked to finish scoreless, goalkeeper Erin McLeod had to make two big saves just before stoppage time — one against Lo’eau LaBonta that had to be palmed over the bar and one against Addie McCain for which the Pride keeper had to make a diving stop.

The second half was a dream start for the Pride as Gunny Jonsdottir got on the end of a ball by Leroux to tap in, giving the Pride a deserved lead in the 51st minute.

Orlando was forced to defend for the next 30 minutes as Kansas City put on more pressure to try to make the comeback. McLeod, who finished with six saves, came up in a massive way with some game-saving stops.

After just making one of those saves, the Current tallied the equalizer thanks to Elyse Bennett. LaBonta put a back post ball in and Bennett was able to fire it home.

The pressure continued by Kansas City, which scored in stoppage time to take the lead. Kristen Hamilton found space between defenders and tapped home the ball, seemingly stealing all three points from Orlando.

However, with seconds left, Strom — who had just won the corner leading to the play — was taken down in the box. Originally, the foul was given outside the box, but after the referee consulted with her assistant, she gave the penalty.

Pressley stepped up to take and convert the kick.
