Senior sets standard

One of the most balanced seasons in recent memory for Orlando area girls volleyball ended with Hagerty playing in the Class 7A state championsh­ip match and Kissimmee Osceola and Orangewood Christian reaching FHSAA state semifinals.

And the future looks bright with eight underclass standouts on the Orlando Sentinel’s 11-player All-Area team. There are five juniors, two sophomores and a ninth-grader on the honor roll.

Player of the Year Brooke Stephens Hagerty, Sr.

Buzz:

The 5-foot-11 senior stepped up when her team needed her most in leading the Huskies (22-9) to a Class 7A state runner-up finish. She had a school singleseas­on record 449 kills to go with 293 digs and 36 aces. For her four-year career, which included a spot on Hagerty’s 2019 state title team as a freshman, Stephens had 909 kills (another school record). Stephens set the record for kills in a match as a junior with 29 in a victory vs. Oviedo. She has not committed to a college.

All-Area Players Sam Bowron

Lake Brantley, Jr.

Buzz: Do-it-all player led Patriots with 247 kills, and added 205 digs, 43 blocks, 31 aces and 259 assists when she adeptly switched to the setter role.

Gabriella

Armitage Olympia, Sr.

Buzz: Four-year starter led district champion Titans in kills (326) and digs (241). She had 35 kills and 32 digs in 3-2 region playoff loss to Windermere.

Mayte Camacho Hagerty, Jr. Buzz:

Libero excelled in keeping the ball alive with 544 digs. Set a school record with 53 in a fivegame match vs. Oviedo. Camacho also had 49 ace serves.

Sarah Gooch Lake Brantley, Sr. Buzz:

Repeat All-Area player had 238 kills, 348 digs, 32 blocks and team-high 38 aces. West Virginia signee had 883 kills, 889 digs as four-year starter.

Anika Groom Bishop Moore, So. Buzz:

The 5-foot-10 outsider hitter led the 4A region runner-up Hornets in kills with 250. She also had 100 digs, 26 blocks and 30 ace serves.

Victoria Hill Trinity Prep, So. Buzz:

Second All-Area honor for 5-foot-9 leaper with 1,203 kills since seventh grade. Collected 415 kills, 291 digs and 33 aces this season.

Alex Liggeri Osceola, Jr. Buzz:

Key player in Osceola’s rise to state semifinal status. Liggeri delivered 1,023 assists and is the only Florida girl over 1,000, according to MaxPreps.

Cate Palmi Kissimmee Osceola, Fr. Buzz:

A first-year phenom for Kowboys (26-5), she had 591 kills on .340 hitting, No. 2 in the state according to MaxPreps. Added 302 digs and 58 ace serves.

Dionna Mitchell Timber Creek, Jr. Buzz:

Dynamic 5-foot-11 outside hitter was a six-rotation standout for the Wolves (15-7). Third-year starter had 340 kills, 224 digs and 22 blocks.

Fallon

Stewart Winter Park, Jr. Buzz:

6-foot-3 junior with a heavy swing smacked 471 kills and added 224 digs and 43 ace serves. Cincinnati commit has 971 career kills.
