AROUND THE HORN

-

Yankees: Domingo Germán retired his first 16 batters, staying in the game after an extensive sticky substance check by umpires and an argument that led to the ejection of Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, leading the Yankees over the Twins 6-1 on Saturday. Wearing No. 42 along with every player on Jackie Robinson Day, Germán (1-1) didn’t allow a hit until his 66th pitch when Christian Vázquez singled up the middle on a fastball with a 2-1 count. He allowed a single to Michael A. Taylor on his next pitch and a double to Trevor Larnach in the seventh. Germán struck out a career-high 11, walked none and gave up one run and three hits in 6 ⅓ innings. He left to a loud ovation after an outing that was a turnaround from Monday at Cleveland, where he walked five in two innings. He was checked after the top of the third by crew chief James Hoye and again when he came onto the field for the top of the fourth. Yankees manager Aaron Boone and team translator Marlon Abreu joined the discussion, which led to a 5 ½-minute gap between half-innings. When the 30-year-old righthander was allowed back to the mound, Baldelli came out of the dugout and jabbed an arm repeatedly as Hoye tossed the manager.

Angels: Angels outfielder Mike Trout hit his 300th career double in the first inning against the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Saturday. The 31-year-old Trout became the fourth player in MLB history with 300 doubles, 300 homers and 200 stolen bases by his age-31 season, joining Willie Mays, Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez . ... The Angels promoted highly touted shortstop Zach

Neto from Double-A before Saturday’s game against the Red Sox. The 22-year-old is the club’s first-round pick from the 2022 draft. He was starting and batting eighth on Saturday, and is expected to get the bulk of the playing time at shortstop.

Pirates: Andrew McCutchen hit a tie-breaking, two-run homer in the 10th inning and the Pirates beat the Cardinals 6-3 on Saturday.

Cardinals: The Cardinals activated outfielder Lars Nootbaar from the 10-day injured list and optioned infielder-outfielder Juan Yepez to Triple-A Memphis prior to Saturday’s game.

Brewers: Brewers reliever Gus Varland was hit on the jaw with a 105.1 mph line drive by Manny Machado and came out of Saturday’s game against the Padres. The scary moment came in the bottom of the eighth. Varland was knocked to the ground by the impact. He got to his feet and dropped his glove as two teammates and a trainer rushed to his side. He was helped to his knees as he was tended to before being helped off the field.

Padres: Jake Cronenworth had his first career multi-homer game with two two-run shots and drove in a career-high six runs as the Padres beat the NL Central-leading Brewers 10-3 Saturday to snap a three-game losing streak.

Rangers: Rangers’ right-hander Jon Gray left Saturday night’s game against the Astros in the third inning after being hit on his throwing elbow by a line drive. There were no outs in the bottom of the third when Astros catcher Yanier Díaz hit a comebacker that bounced off Gray’s elbow.
