Focus on all students

Kathleen Oropeza,

Governorelect Ron DeSantis released his Education Transition Team. It’s a testament to the adage “elections have consequences” writ large. The 41-member group is deeply slanted toward vouchers, charters and an entrenched political agenda hostile to public education. Why is this bad? There are nearly 3 million students enrolled in district public schools, 290,000 in for-profit charters and 140,000 using vouchers to attend private, mostly religious schools, yet DeSantis seems focused on just 14 percent of Florida’s students. When 86 percent of the state’s students don’t seem to be on a new governor’s radar, something is terribly wrong.
