WINTER PARK — The Rotary Tipoff Classic got off to a thrilling start Wednesday evening.

Orlando Christian Prep defeated Wekiva 41-40 in overtime at Winter Park in thanks to a buzzer-beater three-pointer from OCP’s Adonys Henriquez as time expired in regulation to send the game to an extra period.

“I’ve hit many [last-second shots] in my day,” said Henriquez, OCP’s sharpshooting junior.

Even though he was contested and forced to fade away, Henriquez never questioned the result of the shot.

“All my shots feel good when I shoot them, and this one felt good,” he said.

OCP, ranked No. 3 in the Sentinel’s boys basketball Super16 rankings, moves 1-1 on the year.

Henriquez finished with 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half and in overtime. Senior guard Joshua Filmore, had 11 points for Wekiva (1-2).

“In the second half, we tried to be tougher because they were tougher than us,” OCP coach Reggie Kohn said. “The whole game they were tougher and we were fortunate to get the win.”

In the late game, No. 4 Boone (1-1) beat No. 9 Oak Ridge ( 0-2) 50- 33. The Braves overcame a slow start in the first quarter and received strong output from junior guard B.J. Taylor, who had 19 points, including eight in the second quarter. Robby Irwin also had 19.

“They came out hot and we had to regroup, shore up our defense and give a little more effort,” Taylor said.

“This tournament will help us down the road, because during the season, you don’t have a lot of opportunities to play for a championship.”

Oak Ridge was led by Marquel Willis’ 14 points.

OCP faces Boone on Friday at 3 p.m. No. 11 Wekiva takes on Oak Ridge Thursday at 5:15 p.m. That will be followed by Winter Park vs. Lake Brantley at 7 and West Orange vs. No. 2 Lake Highland at 8:30.
