Encouraged by Scott’s support for Medicaid

-

Thursday’s article “Scott: Let’s expand Medicaid” highlighted the plan to add one million uninsured Floridians to be covered under Medicaid.

I’m sure this is welcome news for our state’s 475,000 kids who don’t have health insurance.

It’s important to note that our state has the third-highest number of uninsured children in the nation, according to a study by the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families.

The Heart of Florida United Way advocates for access to health care for all Americans — especially those who are the most vulnerable, like children and seniors.

In Florida, we are particularly concerned about the nearly 3.8 million citizens who lack coverage. We hear and see the need firsthand every day. Half the callers to United Way’s 2-1-1 hotline have no health insurance.

In many cases, the costs of recent medical treatment have seriously impacted their ability to pay rent, keep the lights on or put food on the table.

Central Floridians shouldn’t have to choose between health care and basic necessities.

I amencouraged that Gov. Rick Scott has changed his position, enabling the expansion of coverage to so many who need it so badly.

Although this might not be a long-term solution, at least this plan can offer a short-term reprieve to our state’s most vulnerable residents. It’s my hope that Florida approves this plan.

Those who agree should contact their state legislators.
