-

One of three armed intruders was shot Wednesday when the intended victim fired at the robbers.

Two men and a woman entered an apartment in the Villa Tuscany Apartments complex off Sherwood Terrace Drive at 3:35 a.m. Wednesday, said Ginette Rodriguez, an Orange County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

The victim then shot one of the male intruders, Rodriguez said. There were three people inside the apartment, and one of the suspects knew one of the victims, according to Sentinel news partner Fox 35.

The attackers tried to leave in a gold-colored, four-door car, but deputies caught the three before they could leave the parking lot.

The unidentified suspect was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center with a non-lifethreatening gunshot wound in his stomach.

The suspects were armed with a handgun and a shotgun, Rodriguez said.

School ‘Snax Centers’ asking for more help

Five snack cabinets at Evans High School last year helped stave off hunger problems for students who stayed after school. But for the effort to continue, the Foundation for Orange County Public Schools says it will need more money.

Supporters raised about $25,000 late last year to establish the tall lockers, called “Snax Centers,” at five locations around campus.

Stocked with items including Slim Jims, fruit and granola bars and peanut-butter crackers, the snacks were provided to students around campus after school ended each day.

Before the cabinets were put in place, students were routinely fainting at practices because of hunger, the school’s principal said.

Many didn’t have the time or money to get dinner between 11 a.m. lunches and after-school activities. After the cabinets opened, the ambulance visits stopped, said Fern Lefkowitz, who helped set up food pantries at Evans and Fern Creek elementary before starting the Snax Centers.

The money raised last year is running out, and a new fundraising effort is under way so the cabinet shelves won’t empty, Lefkowitz said. About $7,500 is still needed to stock the cabinets for the rest of the school year.

Anyone interested in donating can contact Lefkowitz at 407-425-1974.
