Lake Mary Prep, Circle Christian rule

-

“This is something we have been talking about for the last year,” said Truslow, who ended in a three-way tie for second individually with teammate Anton Serafini and Circle Christian’s Timothy Colanta. “I knew we had the team that could do it this year. I really wanted to win the individual title, but at the end of the day, this feels great. I’ve had a lot of fun playing with these guys.”

Said LMP coach Steve Ira: “It’s magnificent, nothing better for this group of seniors going out.”

The roles were reversed in the girls 1A state tournament at Harbor Hills Country Club in Lady Lake, with Circle edging Lake Mary Prep by three shots, 587-590. Circle took an 11-shot lead into the final, but sub-par rounds by Sierra Brooks and Dree Fausnaugh, both shooting 2-under 70, helped Lake Mary Prep close the gap.

Lake Highland tied with Ponte Vedra for third in the 2A girls tournament at Mission Inn with a 641. Lake Minneola’s Katie Holt tied for fifth individually with a 4-over 148. In the 2A boys tournament, LHP placed seventh with a 670.

Abbey Carlson led Circle with two rounds of 69 for a 138. Carlson tied for first with former Windermere Prep golfer Shannon Aubert, but Carlson was ineligible for the individual state title by FHSAA rules because she skipped the district tournament to play in an American Junior Golf Association tournament.

Aubert played for Hobe Sound Pine School. Windermere Prep’s Gaby Coello was third (141) and Circle’s Samantha Wagner was tied for fourth (142).

“I’m just coming down off a high,” Circle Christian coach Sean Richardson said after the Centurions won their first girls team title. “I don’t even know what the scores were. I just know we won.”

Truslow, Serafini and Colanta finished with 6-under 138s, two shots behind tournament champ Kerry Sweeney of Mel- bourne Holy Trinity.

“I knew I was capable of playing like this,” Serafini said about shooting two rounds of 69. “Over the summer, I played in a [ junior] tournament in Oregon where I shot a 12-under.”

Colanta finished with the lowest score of his life — a 7-under 65 — for his 138 total.

“It’s been a long time since I have putted as well as I did today,” Colanta said.

Circle Christian boys coach Scott Richardson, Sean’s father, knewhis team was facing an uphill battle.

“Realistically, Lake Mary Prep has five guys who could be No. 1 golfers on five different teams,” Richardson said. “They are a tough team to beat.”
