Man’s attempted robbery thwarted
An Orange County man was arrested after attempting to rob a Mobil gas station on Old Winter GardenRoad on Friday afternoon.
Deputies say the man walked into the gas station about 2:30 p.m. and picked up a few items. The suspect thenwalkedto the cash register and attempted to buy the merchandise with a government-assistance debit card.
When the card was declined, deputies say, the suspect showed the gas-station clerk what appeared to be the handle of aguntuckedinto the waistband of his pants and demanded the clerk hand over all the money inside the register.
The would-be robber’s plans werethwartedmomentslaterwhen another customer walked into the gas station.
Deputies say the man, seemingly spooked by the arrival of another customer, ran fromthe store emptyhanded andwas arrested about half a mile away.
Deputies did not release the man’s name.
It was not clear Saturday whetherthemanplannedto robthe clerk or whether the incidentwas a crime of opportunity prompted by the government-assistance card with insufficient funds.
JaxPort, Carnival Cruise Lines ink deal
JaxPort has ensured the cruise industry will be sticking around awhile longer with a new agreement reached a decade after Carnival began sailing out of the First Coast.
JaxPort and Carnival Cruise Lines inked a deal to extend service out of the cruise-ship docks for a while longer.
Thecruise ship CarnivalFascination will continue to sail from the JaxPort cruise terminal toKeyWest and the Bahamas, though the JaxPort news release did not specify how long the contract extension would run.
Carnival has had a long-running association with JaxPort, though.
The cruise ship Carnival Miracle was the first to sail out of Jacksonville beginning in February 2004.
4th suspect in mansion homeinvasions caught
The fourth suspect in aWindermere mansion home invasion and another attempted mansion burglary in Orange County has been arrestedinCollierCounty, officialssay.
Henry “Ricky” Contreras was found Saturday and arrested without incident. Contreras’ three codefendants— Johnathan Contreras, 27, and Andres Perez, 45, both of Immokalee in Collier County, and Frank Bower, 54, of Oviedo — were arrestedMonday as they attempted to break into a $3 million home in southwest Orange County, authorities said.
Deputies said they were also linked to the recent home invasion of a lakefront Windermere residence owned by thrill-ride inventor Bill Kitchen. Authorities also say the four men may also be responsible for a series of similar home invasions in Collier County, but none of them has been charged in those break-ins. Investigators in Collier County said several tipsters led themtoHenryContreras. Hewillbe transported to Orange County to face charges.
Brevard gas leak forces evacuations of homes
An early-morning rupture of a natural- gas pipeline Saturday forced the evacuation of seven homes in Port St. John and halted train traffic through Brevard County for nearly three hours. Fire officials responded at 6:08 a.m. to thewest side ofU.S. 1near the Florida Power & Light plant in Port St. John. There were no injuries. The cause of the rupture is unknown.
