Magic look to add third point guard

After the team formally signs power forward Channing Frye and shooting guardBenGordononce the league’s moratorium on transactions is lifted Thursday, the Orlando Magic will seektomakeonemoremove infreeagency: findingathird pointguardwhocanbackup Victor Oladipo and Elfrid Payton.

The signings of Frye and Gordon, plus the eventual signing of second-round pick Devyn Marble, will leave theMagic with14 players on their roster. The point guard the team will add in free agency almost certainly will be signed to a one-year contract or a two-year contract that includes a nonguaranteed salary for the 2015-16 season.

Ateam can carry no more than 15 players on its roster during the regular season, including players who have been assigned to the NBA Development League.

Rough day

The Magic lost to the Memphis Grizzlies 80-73 in the Orlando Pro Summer League on Tuesday at Amway Center.

In almost 26 minutes, rookie forward Aaron Gordon scored four points on 4-of-4 shooting from the free-throw line. He missed all three shots he attempted from the field, didn’t have a rebound and didn’t have an assist.

In almost19 minutes, Payton scored six points, collected two rebounds, dished out three assists and committed three turnovers.

Orlando was playing its second game in two days.

“Everybody has to play back- to- backs at some point,” Magic summerleague coach Wes Unseld Jr. said. “It’s probably an experience thetwo young guys haven’t been through, but there are going to be times during the year where you play four [games] in five nights. So it’s a good taste for them.”

Payton had a few highlight-reel plays.

Early in the second quarter, Payton caught an errant pass at Orlando’s foul line. He sprinted upcourt, maneuvered into the lane and dunked in traffic.

In the fourth quarter, he stole the ball, penetrated into the lane and threwano-look lob to center Dewayne Dedmonfor a dunk.

Gordon had trouble getting into a rhythm.

Power forward Romero Osby sat out the exhibition because of a sore shoulder, which forced Gordon to alternate at the forward spots. Onoffense, Gordonclearly is more comfortable playing small forward than at power forward at this early stage of his career.

He’s primarily played small forward during the Magic’s few summer-league practices.

“When I’ve got to think about the offensive schemes of two positions, it throws me out of a little bit of a rhythm,” Gordon said. “But that’s no excuse. I don’t know. I guess my motor could’ve been a little bit higher. It’s something I need to learn. I need to be able to adapt to two positions and then keep my same energy andkeepmyinstinctsgoing.”

Layups

Dedmon finished Orlando’s game with 13 points, three rebounds and two blocks. He also committed seven personal fouls. (In summer-league play, a player cannot foul out.)

The Magic will not play today.
