Dolphins WR Landry rapidly rises to starter

DAVIE — The ascension of Jarvis Landry came without fanfare, and the rookie wide receiver saw no reason to celebrate his name appearing atop the Miami Dolphins’ depth chart for the first time this week.

“It’s not about who starts, who’s No. 1 on the depth chart. It’s about the guys who step on the field and make plays,” Landry said. “For me, things on the depth chart and decisions made like that are not up to me. I can only control what I can control when I’ve got the ball in my hands or when I touch the field.”

Listing Landry as one of three starters at receiver was l a rg e l y a clerical change. The second-round draft choice from LSU has started the past two games and has emerged as an integral part of the Dolphins offense on merit.

He is second on the team with 22 catches for 232 yards. His average of 10.5 yards per reception is also second among those who have caught 17 or more passes.

Landry’s success pushed veteran Brandon Gibson to the inactive list in Sunday’s win against the Bears.

Gibson has struggled in his return from a serious knee injury in 2013 and has just seven catches for 65 yards in four games. A hamstring injury to Gibson provided the opening for Landry’s first start, and he responded with six catches (he was targeted seven times) for 75 yards and a touchdown against Green Bay.
