Muschamp hits recruiting trail

- Edgar Thompson

GAINESVILLE — With questions about his future intensifying, UF coach Will Muschamp hit the recruiting trail on Monday to continue addressing the Gators’ talent deficiencies. He attended the Apopka-at-Edgewater high school game Thursday night in Orlando. The timing was not ideal for a rare in-season recruiting window during a bye week. This past weekend UF lost 42-13 during homecoming to Missouri. Even so, Muschamp said Wednesday he was well received by players and coaches.

“It was good,” he said. “I mean, it’s still the University of Florida. It’s a great education. We’re moving in the recruiting trail very well and signing date’s in February.”

A lot will have to change for Muschamp to oversee the signing of the 2015 recruiting class. Losers of two straight and 10 of 13 games, the Gators (3-3, 2-3 SEC) will face Georgia on Nov. 1 in Jacksonville needing to string some wins together. UF practiced Tuesday through Thursday before Muschamp and his staff resumed recruiting. On Monday, UF sent out a statement from Muschamp’s boss, athletic director Jeremy Foley, who continues to stick with his embattled head coach.

“I appreciate it,” Muschamp said, adding the staff has worked hard to change the culture of the program.

However, on Tuesday, Jerome Baker, a Cleveland native, flipped his commitment from UF to Ohio State. On Thursday, Adonis Thomas of Lawrenceville, Ga., re-opened the recruiting process. He now will choose among the Gators, Alabama and LSU.

Next game: UF vs. Georgia in Jacksonville, 3:30 p.m. Nov. 1 , CBS
