Crealde: 40 years and counting

Many of our local art institutio­ns are celebratin­g anniversar­ies, and they are inviting you to celebrate with them. Some are offering free admission or special events. So get out and visit one — or more — of these treasures and remember to support their fundraisin­g efforts.

Crealde School of Art is marking 40 years of service to our community. The Winter Park art center will host an opening reception today for Rigoberto Torres, known for his life-size figurative sculptures rooted in the celebratio­n of daily life. The Central Florida resident has shown around the world including at the prestigiou­s Whitney Biennial Exhibition in New York City and Venice Bienniale in Italy. The reception is 7-10 p.m. and Torres will present a gallery talk 7-8:30 p.m. at Crealde, 600 St. Andrews Blvd. Details: 407-671-1886.

Up for a road trip? The Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg is commemorat­ing its founding 50 years ago with an open house, 10 a.m;-3 p.m., on Saturday. Admission is free during these hours, and activities include a brass quintet playing outside, violins inside, facepainti­ng and balloon art. Saturday also is the first day to see the MFA’s newest exhibition, “Monet to Matisse: On the French Coast,” featuring some never-before-seen-in-Florida works by major French artists. Coastal and maritime paintings include those by artists such as Renior, Monet, Matisse and Picasso (actually a Spaniard).
