Woman gets ticketed after crash hurts 5

Five South Florida residents — three women and two girls — were hospitalized Wednesday with minor injuries after the SUV they were in crashed on State Road 417 when it was hit by another vehicle in east Orange County, officials said.

A Winter Park woman, Leslie Castillo, 21, was ticketed for making an improper lane change in her 2004 Suzuki, which hit the 2004 Toyota SUV with five passengers from Plantation, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Both vehicles were northbound on S.R. 417 near mile marker 30 before the 9:29 a.m. crash, FHP said. That’s near the intersection of S.R. 417 and Curry Ford Road.

Castillo’s Suzuki was in the right lane when she attempted to move into the center lane occupied by the Toyota. The left front of the Suzuki hit the right side of the Toyota. After the initial collision, the Toyota traveled into the center median, where it struck a guardrail and overturned into the southbound shoulder, FHP said.

The occupants of the SUV were identified as driver Nhung Thanh Phan, 45, and passengers Diem Phan, 37; Lan Phan, 43; Angila Tran, 7; and Kayla Phan, 5.

Suspect in Pine Hills shooting identified

Orange County deputies say 40-year-old Jaime Agustin is the suspect who shot and killed another man at a home in the Pine Hill neighborhood Saturday evening.

The shooting was reported at 5:25 p.m. after witnesses heard gunfire followed by the sound of a man yelling that he had been shot. Deputies say the victim was 22-year-old Michael Reid. By the time investigators arrived, he was already dead at the home on Long Peak Drive. Agustin remained at the scene and was “cooperative,” deputies said the night of the slaying. Agustin has not been arrested. Instead, deputies say possible charges were forwarded to the State Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors will review the case to determine whether Agustin should face formal charges or if he acted in self-defense.
